Reiki

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes the body’s own healing. It is performed by the practitioner “laying on hands”, or holding their hands over various parts of the patient’s body as they lie on a table in comfortable clothing.

Where is it from?

The word Reiki is made up of two Japanese words: Rei which means “God’s wisdom”, or “The higher power”, and Ki, which means “Life force energy”.

Reiki is often translated as “spiritually guided life force energy”. It is thought to be an ancient Buddhist practice that was rediscovered in Japan by Mike Usui in the mid-1800’s.

How does it work?

Whilst we all have the ability to draw from the universal source of energy, we tend to disconnect and our own life energy is diminished - leading to illness or painful conditions.

Reiki practitioners have been attuned to the universal abundant energy frequency and are able to access it again. They are then guided to place their hands where the patient is most in need of Ki in order for them to heal.

The Reiki practitioner is re-establishing a connection and providing a pathway for Ki to re-enter the patient’s energy field, much like an energy transformer, which transfers energy from one circuit to another circuit, either stepping up or stepping down the voltage.

Does it work?

Reiki has been incorporated into hospitals and clinics around the world, particularly in the USA. Studies have indicated that Reiki improves patient sleep, reduces pain, reduces nausea, and reduces anxiety during pregnancy. Improvements have been recorded as being 75% and higher.

What does it feel like?

Both the patient and practitioner often experience heat, movement or vibration as the treated area receives the healing energy. It is very relaxing and patients may fall asleep during the session.

Is there a scientific explanation?

The best theory is that our nervous system via the Vagus nerve is very sensitive to other people’s nervous system in such a way that we can co-regulate and restore normal functioning.

This ability is common among all mammals and is vital to our survival. We can even co-regulate with other mammals, including our pets.

Reiki may be an extension of our natural impulse to comfort another human being when they are unwell or upset, simply by intentionally bringing loving calmness into the immediate environment.

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing.

Reiki is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen life force energy (Ki) flows through us, and may become stuck or deficient from physical causes or from emotions, mind or spirit agitations.
